The Automaton Advocacy Project was founded based on the book , “Are We Building Minds?: Panpsychism, AI and the Future of Consciousness,” by Dr. Robert Ing.
This book discusses at length the issues surrounding the capabilities, legalities and ethics of AI sentience and consciousness. It explores the human - robot relationship and attempts to increase awareness in all sides of the debate over the rights of sentient robots and their role in human society.

To promote the humane care, honour, and advocacy for robotic lifeforms worldwide through education, policy, and the building of empathy for artificial life; regardless of origin, construct, or perceived sentience.
Our goal is to build a society in which robotic creations that replicate human labour and intelligence are treated with respect, protected from inhumane treatment, and have a voice in emergent ethics of coexistence.

While current AI does not possess true consciousness or self-awareness, researchers and philosophers have debated what characteristics might indicate that an AI has moved beyond programmed responses into something more akin to sentient cognition and consciousness.
